On Jan. 19, 2017, more than 100,000 women took over Civic Center Park and downtown Denver. Now, a year later, organizers are planning to do the same thing.
Organizers of the 2018 Women’s March, which is scheduled for Jan. 20, said 200,000 people could attend according to the permit request filed with Denver Parks and Recreation. That’s far more than the 5,000 organizers initially expected last year.
So far, nearly 7,900 people have said they will be going on Facebook while more than 27,800 have said they are interested.
As of Tuesday, 14 women’s marches in Colorado were registered online, including ones in Denver, Aspen and Colorado Springs. Across the nation, 673 marches are registered.
Thinking about attending the Denver march? Here’s what you need to know:
Schedule: People will begin gathering at Civic Center Park at 9 a.m. The march is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. A rally follows at noon.
Route: The one-mile route heads in a different direction this year to reduce bottlenecks. Starting on Bannock Street at the City and County Building, marchers will head south to West 13th Avenue. Then they’ll head east to Lincoln Street, moving north to East 14th Avenue. From there, they’ll head east again to Grant Street. Marchers will head north on Grant Street before turning to head west on Colfax Avenue back to the park.
Transportation: Shuttles will ferry people from Colorado Springs and Boulder into Denver. Boulder riders will be picked up at 8 a.m. and dropped off at the Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse at 8:35 a.m. Colorado Springs riders will be picked up at 7:20 a.m. and dropped off at Civic Center a little after 8:30 a.m. Shuttles will take people home at 5 p.m. The Boulder shuttle costs $40 and the Colorado Springs shuttle costs $50. The park is also next to Denver bus routes and near the Union Station rail line, which connects to the park via the 16th Street Mall Ride. The Regional Transportation District has a trip planner available online.
What to bring: Organizers recommend warm clothes, a hat, mittens, a scarf, comfortable shoes, water, snacks, a phone and pocket warmers.
