Margao: Town and country planning minister Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday said that the creation of an independent municipality for Fatorda would happen soon after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking after inaugurating the new premises for the Fatorda post office, in the presence of South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar, Sardesai said that the next step for Fatorda is the municipality.
"Independence of Fatorda is inevitable. This has to happen. Elections to the new Fatorda civic body will be held after the Lok Sabha polls," Sardesai said.
Justifying his decision, Sardesai said, "Fatorda is moving forward. Lot of development is happening here."
Sawaikar, in his address, said that efforts were underway to start a Passport Seva Kendra in South Goa.
Sawaikar said that the premises and infrastructure for the centre were ready and that Union external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has assured him of expediting the matter.
Postmaster general N Vinodkumar said that Goa was the first state to complete the entire process of computerisation of all post offices.
Senior superintendent of post offices, Goa division, Archana Gopinathan delivered the welcome address.
