Any time a smartphone manufacturer can claim a world’s first, they’ll do it; regardless of how niche the feature.

Today, Razer announced its Razer Phone is about to become the first to support HDR and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound within the Netflix app.

The functionality will come via a firmware update for both the display and the audio system, which will arrive later this month.

You’ll be able to enjoy that surround sound mimicking feature through the phone’s stereo front facing speakers.

It’ll also provide through headphones, providing you use the THX-certified USB-C dongle that arrived with the handset.

Designed with the firm’s gaming audience in mind, one of the phone’s strengths is its excellent 5.7-inch screen.

The unique, maximum 120Hz refresh rate is designed for gamers, but will certainly boost the Netflix HDR content.

The handset itself arrives with packing the Snapdragon 835 CPU paired with a whopping 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM.

We have the phone an 8/10 score, which is pretty darn impressive for a first stab. We praised the display, but were disappointed with the underpowered camera.

In his review, Alastair Stevenson wrote: “The Razer Phone is a fantastic handset that makes the case for smartphones including variable refresh rate screens. It’s only a shame the camera falls way short of expectations.”
