An ex-Louisiana mayor has been sentenced to a year's probation as part of his guilty plea involving allegations that he misused city credit cards to pay personal expenses.

Former New Roads Mayor Robert Myer also was ordered Tuesday to pay the city $1,800.

Myer entered a no-contest plea in October to one count of malfeasance in office. He had been indicted in 2016 on nine counts of malfeasance and a count of abuse of office.

As part of the deal, Myer was forced to resign.

The Advocate reports that Myer made a statement after Tuesday's court hearing, describing his plea as "the best decision for the city of New Roads to move forward." He refused to answer questions.

Anthony Daisy has been appointed interim mayor until elections are held this year.
