A Spartanburg man convicted of shooting his wife outside their Reidville Road home in 2016 was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Johnathan Olin Batchelor, 29, pleaded guilty to attempted murder in Spartanburg County Circuit Court on Friday.

Batchelor was arrested weeks after Spartanburg County deputies went to his home in reference to a shooting.

His wife was found in the front yard of their home on Jan. 7, 2016. She was face down in the grass suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to an incident report from the sheriff’s office.

Authorities had said they were unable to identify the shooter until a few weeks later when the victim was able to name Batchelor as the person responsible.

When deputies first arrived on the scene, Batchelor led them to his wife and it appeared that a carjacking had taken place.

Spartanburg County Circuit Court Judge Derham Cole handed down a 30-year prison sentence that was suspended to 18 years plus five years of probation, 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office spokesman Murray Glenn said.

The sentence includes credit for time served. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim, Glenn said.
