NATICK – The town’s next fire chief will be a recognizable face.
On Monday, the Board of Selectmen picked Natick Deputy Chief Michael Lentini to be the next fire chief, pending agreement on a contract.
Lentini has worked for the Natick Fire Department since 1990 and rose through the ranks.
Selectmen praised his experience and leadership and the testimonials of those who know him.
“The bottom line is, he’s a leader,” said Selectman Rick Jennett.
Selectmen had three experienced finalists from which to pick a chief to replace retiring Chief Rick White, who plans to stay on through the end of February to assist with the transition. The other finalists were Natick Deputy Chief Daniel Dow, who has worked for the department since 1995, and Rochester, New Hampshire, Assistant Chief Mark Dupuis, who has 29 years of experience at the Rochester Fire Department.
Selectmen said any of the three would have made a great chief.
“In that situation, it is my philosophy that the town should promote from within and recognize the quality of leadership we have in the department,” Selectman Sue Salamoff said.
She praised Lentini's experience leading shifts and helping coordinate Boston Marathon emergency services.
He also has a “command presence” when he walks into a room, Salamoff said.
A fire chief should show honesty, integrity and leadership and have good communications skills, Lentini told selectmen during his public interview last month.
“I lead by example," he said. "I like to let guys know if I want them to roll their sleeves up then I’m going to do the same.”
He sees the chief’s job as part of his progression in the department.
“I need to be challenged, I enjoy a challenge,” Lentini said. “I truly enjoy being a leader.”
Selectmen conducted their own interviews with candidates and talked to town officials and others in assessing the candidates.
They were looking for someone who can understand the department’s needs today and where they might be in five years.
Lentini’s qualifications and experience put him in the best position to lead the department, board Chairman Jonathan Freedman said.
