President seeks Supreme Court opinion on duration of his term 
President Maithripala Sirisena has asked the opinion of the Supreme Court about the duration of the term of the office of President.
The President has referred this to the Supreme Court, in terms of Article 129 (1) of the Constitution.
According to the 19th amendment to the Constitution, the duration of the term of office of President is 5 years.
Before the 19th Amendment was enacted the term of the office of President was 6 years.
The Chief Justice has been asked to convey the opinion to the President on or before 14th of this month.
The letter mentioned, quote, "Whether in terms of provisions of the Constitution, I, as the person elected and succeeding to the office of President and having assumed such office in terms of Article 32 (1) of the Constitution on 9th January 2015, have any impediment to continue in the office of President for a period of 6 years from 9th January 2015, the date on which the result of my election to the office of the President was declared", unquote.
Accordingly, the Registrar of the Supreme Court has informed the Bar Association of Sri Lanka that it will be listed on 11th of January.
