Unnecessary opposition

| | Delhi

Sir — This refers to the article, “Opp ploy to delay triple talaq Bill indefinitely” (January 7) by  Swapan Dasgupta. The hanging fate of the Triple Talaq Bill resembles the fate of the film, Padmawati. There can be no denying to the fact that gender discrimination on any ground, even religious, is illogical. Living in a country where the Constitution is supreme, should make it binding upon each and every citizen to practice constitutional religion to strengthen the rule of law and democracy.

The Constitution is supreme and grants the freedom to follow any religion. Supporters of triple talaq plead that this practice is in accordance with religion. One wonders, how can a religion permit an inhuman practice? The practice of triple talaq was proved illegal by the Supreme Court after considering hundreds of comments on the issue. It is at the behest of the apex court that the ruling Government is wanting to frame a legislation, which must be welcomed.

The Opposition’s move to block the Bill is to not let the BJP gain the support of Muslim women. It is the apprehensiveness of the Opposition that if the Bill is passed, the BJP will gain.  This is why a lame excuse has been invented that if the person uttering triple talaq is jailed, then who will feed the family, including the wife. The Opposition does not think that if triple talaq is effected, then who will feed the divorced wife?
