The United Way Volunteer Center matches volunteers with nonprofit community agencies. The following listings are for volunteers 18 years and older with flexible hours available unless otherwise noted. A background check is required and training provided for most listings. The Volusia Interfaith/Agencies Networking In Disaster (VIND): Looking for a volunteer who will oversee and coordinate other volunteers assisting in disaster rebuilding, recovery and response efforts in terms of construction or in disaster mitigation. 2. The American Cancer Society: Looking for volunteers to serve in the planning committee for the Daytona Beach, Holly Hill and Southeast Volusia Relay for Life event taking place in the spring. For more information, contact Cheryl Sullivan at 386-274-3274 ext. 5857.
3. Children’s Home Society and Panera Bread: Are collecting donations from their annual “Operation Lemonade for Kids” event on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5. For a donation, customers will receive a cup of lemonade. All donations will go towards helping over 300 vulnerable youth in foster care in Volusia, Flagler and Putnam counties. 4. Family Renew Committee: Looking for donations for normal household supplies like toilet paper, paper towels, soaps, cleaning materials, feminine products, tooth brushes, toothpaste, hair brushes and more. There are also looking for Volunteers for clerical functions to assist the program managers with daily duties like answering calls, greeting guests, and basic office functions. 5. Church of the Holy Child: Has a support group for grandparents raising their grandchildren. These will be held the last Wednesday of the month and is free to attend. There will be food prepared and transportation is available. Please RSVP to the Church of the Holy Child by calling 386-672-4470.
6. Hush Puppy Haven: Looking for Foster Pet Parents who are available at a moment’s notice to foster animals received through domestic abuse shelters, police departments or victim’s advocates. For more information, call 800-500-1119.
7. ElderSource: Looking for senior citizen advocates to help seniors sign up for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP! Be an Advocate! For more information, call 904-391-6688.
8. Guardian Ad Litem: Be the voice of a child in foster care. The guardian observes and notes what is in the best interest of the child. All volunteers receive support from program staff and attorneys and work as a team to provide advocacy for the child. For more information, call Kim Taylor at 386-589-6825.
9. United Way Volusia-Flagler Counties: Looking for Volunteers to serve as reading mentors to Pre-K and VPK students in Volusia and Flagler Counties. Volunteers must commit to one or more 30 minute sessions at least twice a week for a full school year in order to provide the student with a total of 25 contact hours.
