NEWCOMERSTOWN — Principal Jason Peoples and the staff and students at Newcomerstown Middle School recently had their generosity recognized by a Texas school that was part of the afflicted area when Hurricane Harvey pounded the region late last year.
The Newcomerstown school received a thank you note from Hailey Elementary School in The Woodlands, Texas, after local students and staff raised money and collected items to send to the area. Carol Boltz of Newcomerstown Middle School helped with the project and a former Newcomerstown teacher, Kari Johnson, now works in the Texas school district and also helped with the project.
The thank you letter from Texas reads:
"Dear Ms. Boltz and our friends at Newcomerstown Middle School:
"We at Hailey Elementary School in The Woodlands, Texas, are so grateful to have received the package loaded with love and care from your school. As we read about your students’ dodge ball tournament and staff dress down days, we were amazed at the caring that you displayed for us all the way in Texas.
"It seems experiences such as Hurricane Harvey heighten our awareness of the suffering that others experience. Truly the Texas Gulf Coast was impacted terribly by Harvey — only to be followed by numerous other hurricanes rising out of the Atlantic and affecting Florida, Puerto Rico and other places. But things were said during those days like, "There is more love than water in Houston, Texas," and "So much good has come from this." Our students’ families have continually expressed deep gratitude for the love shown them in the aftermath of this flood. And the love has flowed to us all the way from Ohio.
"Immediately after Harvey, there was quite an outpouring of support in our immediate community so when we received your generous gifts, we chose to save them until this Christmas season. In the coming days, we will be distributing your gifts to our families who were flooded by Harvey. We will also tell them how your school raised the money for these gifts and we believe that your gifts will be especially meaningful to them at this time. Thank you so much for caring for those in need.
"We are so thankful and we wish Newcomerstown Middle School the very best this holiday season and always."
The letter is signed by Tracy Horne, principal, and Mary Lou Florian, school counselor, on behalf of the families of Hailey Elementary School.
