Fernando Alonso is risking his success in Formula 1 by trying to race in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the same time.

Alonso is trying to achieve motor racing’s Triple Crown, which involves winning the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indy 500.

In preparation for Le Mans, he is taking part in the 24 Hours of Daytona at the end of the month and has just started testing for the event.

But former F1 driver Mark Webber, who has raced at Le Mans five times and won the WEC in 2015, believes Alonso is playing with fire.

“It's a mistake, [F1 and WEC] are totally different things,” Webber told Italian outlet Automoto.

“They require a lot of mental energy.

“If you do F1 you can not afford certain distractions.

“If you choose to do Le Mans, do it properly and focus on it, instead of working on it with three weeks to go with a maniacal focus, without forgetting the rest of the year.

“Today's F1 is so specific that does not allow gaps.”

Kimi Raikkonen is on the lookout for a new race engineer after Dave Greenwood left Ferrari after three years working with the Finn.

Greenwood joined the team in 2015 from Marussia but has now left the Italian set-up for personal reasons and will join Manor’s World Endurance Championship (WEC).

However, it remains unclear whether Raikkonen will receive a direct replacement or if Greenwood’s duties will be split between current staff, with senior performance engineer Jock Clear one of those likely to take up the slack.

Either way, Raikkonen will be desperate to get it right and improve on his 2017 fourth-place finish in the championship.

"Obviously I want to be fighting at the front every weekend and to be able to fight for the championship next year," Raikkonen said.

"We started this year pretty badly, we were not where we should have been, personally, on my side, I was not very happy with the set-up and it took quite a long time to figure it out.

“Since then it has been better, but we've also had too many DNF [did not finish] for different reasons.”

Lewis Hamilton has maintained his social media silence in 2018 - although his personal website has been updated with three new posts.

Hamilton got himself into hot water over Christmas with an Instagram video in which he was accused of “shaming” his young nephew, who was featured wearing his Christmas present, a “princess dress”.

The Brit subsequently issued a frank apology, but that has now been removed along with almost all his Twitter posts with the account now unaccessible.

Hamilton has also deleted every single picture from his Instagram account, meaning more than 10 million followers of the four-time F1 world champion have been left with blank screens.

But his personal website, lewishamilton.com, featured two short clips of the motorbike he has designed and a “happy birthday” message from a school in India, all posted yesterday.

Hamilton turned 33 on January 7.
