Donald Trump and Brexit have shaken the standing of the liberal international order, said Joseph Nye, a professor at Harvard University. 

In an interview with Bloomberg, the professor admitted the current system has been under threat since the Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump.

He said: “The question of the liberal international order was called into question by Donald Trump in the campaign, but it was also called into questions by many people who said that populism wasn’t just a phenomenon of Trump but also with Brexit in Britain and elsewhere.

“It’s under threat but it’s not over. We still do have an international trading system, though it remains to be seen how well that will survive. 

“We also have a degree of stability in the international monetary system. 

“So it’s not over but it’s being shaken a bit.”

On Brexit, he added: “I think Brexit is not good for Britain’s standing. Britain had a position as sort of a connector between Europe and the United States.

“Britain also had a position of being very important part of what was happening inside Europe. 

“Going through a divorce instead of that has hurt Britain. How well it will recover or not remains to be seen in the terms of the divorce.”

The liberal international order, or body of rules, norms and institutions that govern relations between key players on the international stage, has come under fire from populist movements worldwide.

Last year, the RAND Corporation, a US think tank, published a comprehensive assessment of the key series of events since 2014 threatening the order. 

Among the key developments threatening the Order, the vote in the UK to leave the EU, the election of Donald Trump and the ongoing influence of far-right political parties in the rest of Europe.
