Nokia reckons its Sleep sensor can get you 12 minutes extra sleep a night

Nokia has unveiled a new sleep sleep sensor at CES 2018 alongside improvements to its Health Mate app and a new Rose Gold finish for the Nokia Steel HR.
Nokia Health, formerly Withings, already has some experience in tracking sleep through many of its wrist-worn wearables, but its new Nokia Sleep sensor is a lot more discreet, which might be beneficial for the many people who don’t like wearing things on their wrist overnight.
The Nokia Sleep takes the form of a Wi-Fi connected sensor that’s designed to discreetly slip under your mattress, using your movement to detect your sleep pattern as well as monitoring for snoring. It’s not the first of its kind to work this way, previously there have been devices like the Beddit that took a similar approach.
The Sleep is promising to deliver sleep cycle recognition, letting you know how much time is spent in deep, light and REM stages, as well as providing a sleep score to give you an idea of the actual restorative quality of that night’s kip. S
Nokia says it’s worked with sleep specialist Dr. Christopher Winter M.D. From the Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine Clinic for a Sleep Smarter program in the Health Mate app. It says users can increase their sleep by 12 minutes a night with small changes to their behaviour and routine. It doesn’t really sound like much, but for anyone familiar with the ‘snooze’ button on their alarm, 12 minutes might feel like a gift from the gods.
Things get a little more interesting through support for IFTTT automation. Nokia envisages the Sleep as being able to control your other smart home devices through IFTTT, triggering recipes such as turning off the lights when it detects you’ve gotten into bed or dialling up the thermostat when you get out.
All of the data syncs with Nokia’s Health Mate app so if you have any of Nokia’s other health products, such as the Nokia Body smart scale or Nokia Steel HR, you can get an all-encompassing view on your important metrics. The Nokia Sleep will be available in Q1 for £100.
On the topic of the Nokia Health app, Nokia used CES to also announce new Alexa integration. So you’ll be able to ask Alexa just how you’re getting along, something that’s been available with Fitbit devices for a while now.
There’s also a new Rose Gold finish coming to the freshly re-branded Nokia Steel HR with either silicone or leather bands.
