Hindu woman takes her own life after being bullied on WhatsApp over her friendship with a Muslim man
According to the police, a Hindu woman committed suicide after being harassed for befriending a Muslim man in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

20-year-old B.Com student Dhanyashree had committed suicide at her residence in Chikkamangalur, Karnataka on Saturday.

The police recovered a suicide note in which the girl has stated moral policing by a group of five people including Anilraj, a leader of the BJP Yuva Morcha, as the reason behind her extreme step.

The note further says that a few boys including Anilraj had barged into her house and harassed her and her mother after she was seen talking to a Muslim man. They alleged that she was falling victim to 'Love Jehad'.

During a routine chat on WhatsApp with her friend Santosh on Friday, Dhanyashree had written, 'I love Muslims', in reply to a question. Santosh later shared the screenshot of the chat with local Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Paridshad (VHP) leaders. The screenshot went viral and led to people posting hate comments causing mental trauma to the girl and her family.

The police later recovered the girl's phone and found out that her picture along with the Muslim man had been widely circulated on social media by Hindu fringe elements.

"Many have made comments on the picture on social media platforms. We will arrest all those who harassed her either orally or through social media. We have taken the case seriously, and our teams are working to arrest all the accused," the SP told The Hindu.

The Mudigere police arrested Anilraj on Sunday evening on the charge of abetting the suicide of the girl. He is currently being interrogated. In the meanwhile, the police have launched a massive manhunt for the main accused, Santosh.
