Environmental degradation and global climate change are a matter of grave concern nowadays. The environmental problems that mankind is facing are multifaceted –pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, nuclear testing, ozone layer depletion, climate change etc and many more.

The reality is that human beings have considered the environment as a basic storehouse of resources.  Recently, in a global summit it has been found that most of the prominent countries, though concerned for rapid degradation of environment but its preventive mechanism was not so pro-active in the contexts of present global scenario.

It requires a proper attitude to visualise what is essential to minimize environmental degradations for the survival of flora and fauna of the earth. It requires a sense of urgency and willingness to be the voice of the earth.

The book ‘People who make a Change,’ compiled by Prof Dhanalaxmi Dash and Prof Mahendra Kumar Satapathy, tells the stories of 56 environmentalists, offering biographical facts and brief description of the work that they have done in the field of ecology and environment in a global perspective.

Amongst them are writers, social activists, plant lovers, teachers, scientists, lawyers and explorers.

Many of these people are well known for their work, but others are barely known at all. Their activity has provided significant contribution towards mother earth.

Sometimes we hear about a new challenge to the environment- a species endangered, a river polluted, a waste dump leaking, a forest about to be clear cut, a mine disaster or natural calamity like earthquake, flood, tsunami etc but some way or the other its primary cause is selfish attitude of the mankind for which total ecology is disturbed.

The book depicts inspiring examples of environmental heroes of all backgrounds, from all walks of life covering all over the world. These are people just like you and me who can make a change to save our natural planet for better survival of all living beings.

Along with western environmentalists, the book has also narrated the valuable contribution of Indian environmentalists like Bhagat Puran Singh, Kartikeya Sarabhai, MC Mehta, Menaka Gandhi, MS Swaminathan, Pradip Krishen, Rajendra Singh, Robin Banerjee, Sunderlal Bahuguana, Medha Patkar, Swami Sundaranand etc.

Another attraction of the book is photographs of 56 environmentalists which enhances the beauty of the book.
