Chelsea transfer news: Antonio Conte wants Andy Carroll to do Diego Costa job - pundit
CHELSEA boss Antonio Conte wants to sign West Ham striker Andy Carroll because he brings the qualities lost by the sale of Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid.
That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester City striker Shaun Goater.
Carroll is a shock target for Chelsea as Conte looks for back up to Alvaro Morata.
The former England international has had a series of injury problems during his time at West Ham, making just 14 appearances in all competitions this season.
Goater reckons Carroll would not get as much aerial supply with the Blues as he does at the Hammers.

Diego Costa, a former Chelsea player, he was a big, physical player. Conte knows that was key to them winning the Premier League
But he thinks Conte would like the 29-year-old to hold the ball up and create width for his side, just like Costa did.
“For me it’s a strange one,” Goater said on Sky Sports News.
“Andy Carroll’s that sort of player, he’s the best at attacking the ball when it’s put in the box.
“But when I think about Chelsea I see slick play, I see inter-changing, I see through ball.

“I don’t see a ton of crosses, I do see crosses, (Eden) Hazard is a quality player, Willian, these players will put crosses in.
“So it didn’t seem the perfect fit for me but saying that, they would certainly have to adjust slightly to get the best out of Carroll.

“He (Conte) knows that was key to them winning the Premier League, so he’s probably thinking ‘we need someone who can hold that ball up, so when it goes wide we can dominate’. So that is perhaps his thinking.”
