PANAJI: The norms for physical attributes required of Goa
police recruits were recently relaxed by the state government to be able to hire more personnel to the force. This, however, does not seem to have to worked as planned.
More than 500 posts at the sub-inspector, head constable and constable level are lying vacant in Goa police as per latest statistics submitted by the state government to the Union ministry of home affairs.
In a
recruitment drive held in late 2016 to rope female personnel into the force, only around 200 of the over 8,000 applicants made the cut despite relaxation in norms like height and weight requirements.
The highest vacancies in Goa are at the constable level, with 260 of the 3,900 sanctioned posts waiting to be filled. The second highest number of vacancies are at the sub-inspector level, where 120 of the 370 sanctioned positions are yet to be filled.
Another 52 posts are lying vacant at the head constable level, of the 1,000-odd positions that have received the state's nod.
Vacancies in the Goa police up to the level of superintendent of police are either negligible or nil. It, however, appears to be difficult to fill up posts below this level. Even for the post of assistant superintendent of police, for instance, 11 of the 32 sanctioned positions are yet to be filled.
The state government is presently in the process of carrying out direct recruitment of 15 deputy superintendents of police (DySPs) into the force.
