Mumbai: Indian cement maker Ambuja Cement has been ranked 7 by the internationally renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) in the construction material category, making the company the only Indian manufacturer to be awarded such a high rank.

The company, which is part of the global conglomerate Lafarge Holcim has been recognised for performing well in key parameters in the DJSI Emerging Markets Index, led by its vision to be the most sustainable and competitive company in the industry.

"It is a moment of pride that our sustainability performance has been recognised globally. The high ranking in the most renowned DJSI reaffirms our commitment to the principles of sustainable development. This is yet another step drawing us closer to achieving our vision as the most sustainable company in the industry," Ajay Kapur, Ambuja Cement MD and CEO said in a statement.

"Ambuja shall continue to effectively conduct the True Value approach - a triple bottom-line which encompasses three Ps (Profit, People and Planet), creating greater value to all stakeholders - customers, investors, employees and society at large," Kapur said.

The DJSI are a family of benchmarks that selects sustainability leaders from various industries across the world, enabling investors to track the companies' performance and integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios. Since the launch of the DJSI World in 1999, several other Dow Jones Sustainability Indices and new index families that rely on the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) results have been developed to meet a range of investor specific needs.

In recent times, Ambuja has bagged six awards - an 'Outstanding Accomplishment for Corporate Excellence' award while the rest for 'Domain Excellence' in environment management and corporate social responsibility- from the apex body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The company also secured two awards at the international seminar held by the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB) recently.
