Highlights

20:39(IST)

Vernon Philander has been named man of the match for his stunning show in both the innings. He picked three in the first innings and then picked six in the second to end match with figures of 9/75.

20:34(IST)
20:31(IST)

Stat Attack: 208 - This is the lowest total defended in South Africa since 1998. In this low-scoring game, 72-run win for South Africa is a huge victory and its back to the drawing board for the visitors. They need to up their game and selection for that matter, if they want to keep their hopes of first series win in South Africa alive.

20:29(IST)

One has to feel for Hardik Pandya as he put on a stunning all-round show in the match. Pandya scored 93 in the first innings and took 3 wickets in two innings and was easily India's best player in the match. Had it not been for Pandya's innings, India would have lost by a much bigger margin.

20:26(IST)

CricketNext’s Baidurjo Bhose from Cape Town: This is it! Philander sends back Bumrah for a duck to register a 72-run victory for the South Africans. The crowd goes berserk as they had almost given up hope after the batsmen left a lot to be desired in the morning session. Time for the Indians to go back to the drawing board and start strategising again for the rest of the series. It was the perfect opportunity to register their first win at the venue, but the batsmen let the team down.

20:25(IST)

Stat Attack: This is Vernon Philander’s 12th 5-for in test matches. 6/42: These are Vernon Philander’s best figures in a test innings. What a performance this has been from the pacer as he wrecked the Indian batting in both the innings.

20:24(IST)

What a Test match this has been as it had it all. Even after one day was washed out, the fans were entertained right from the start. In the end, AB De Villiers' 65 and 35 & Philander 9 wicket in the match proved to be the difference between the two sides.

20:21(IST)

Match Ends: South Africa beat India by 72 runs as Philander picks the last wicket of the Indian innings. Bumrah edged the ball into the hands of Du Plessis as it was replay of Shami's wicket. Philander ends innings with marvelous figures of 6/42.

20:18(IST)

OUT: After hitting a four on the first ball, Shami edges the ball into the hands of Du Plessis in the slip as India are now nine down. Philander picks his fifth wicket of the innings as India are on the verge of defeat now.

20:17(IST)

OUT: Heartbreak for the Indian team and the fans as Philander finally breaks the 49-run partnership by getting rid of R Ashwin. Great captaincy by Du Plessis as he asked de Kock to stand closer to the stumps. Ashwin edged the ball and De Kock took a brilliant reflex catch. India lose their eight wicket.

20:15(IST)

In this recently concluded over, almost every delivery took an edge of the the bat but every time it went safely behind for runs. Indian duo are still keeping the team breathing and they are still in the chase.

20:09(IST)

This partnership between Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar is the perfect example of how it become easier to bat out there once you apply yourself. The duo are negating whatever the bowlers are throwing at them and they have started to score runs as well at good pace.

20:05(IST)

Four: Stunning drive from Bhuvneshwar this time as he brings up his first four of the innings. Bhuvi leans into the drive as Maharaj bowls a bit wide and the ball goes in between two fielders on the off-side. The partnership between Ashwin and Bhuvi is worth 41 now.

20:04(IST)

Four: Ashwin continues to wage a battle against the hosts as they continue to hit boundaries. This time, Ashwin punches a Rabada delivery from backfoot to backward square leg. Good way to end the over for the hosts.

19:58(IST)

DRS: Maharaj traps Ashwin LBW but the umpire says not out. The Proteas opted for DRS but replays showed that the ball was missing the leg stump by a massive margin. South Africa lose their review. India: 114/7, need 94 to win.

19:55(IST)

Four and Four: R Ashwin gets couple of boundaries in Philander's first over in the final session. On the first ball of the over, Ashwin flicked the ball for a boundary towards mid-wicket. Then two balls later, the ball takes a huge edge of Ashwin's bat but goes just wide of Du Plessis who even dove to reach the ball. In process he even hurt his shoulder. But the South African skipper is fine, looks a bit jaded though.

19:50(IST)

Chance: Maharaj bowled a bit full and it caught Bhuvi on the pads. Huge appeal from the South African's but the umpire says not out as he feels that the ball was going down leg. Replays showed that the umpire was right. Vernon Philander is now being introduced into the attack.

19:46(IST)

Bowling Change: Spinner Keshav Maharaj is being introduced into the attack as expected. The pacers were looking a bit jaded and skipper Du Plessis feels that spinner is the best way to go about things at the moment.

19:42(IST)

Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada have been guilty of not bowling in the right line and length to these two tailenders. They have bowled to wide to Ashwin and Bhuvi in the final session of the day so far. Bowling change must be on the cards now.

19:37(IST)

Ashwin and Bhuvi continue to bat with great vigour and valour as they keep thwarting whatever the South African pacers are throwing at them. So far, Morkel and Rabada haven't been able to trouble them much. But Bhuvi and Ashwin aren't adding to much to the score either.

19:31(IST)

Four: Morkel this time bowls a bit short and Ashwin flicks the ball for a boundary pas the backward square region. Good shot from the Indian all-rounder. Let's see for how long these two can frustrate the hosts. So far so good.

19:29(IST)

From the other end, it is Kagiso Rabada who is having a real shot at the Indian tail. Both Rabada and Morkel are trying to hit bounce Ashwin and Bhuvi out. The duo are just delaying the inevitable.

19:24(IST)

Morkel gives away just two runs from his first over. At this point, can't think of any scenario where India could get a positive result. The South African pacers are wreaking havoc and Indian batsmen are just hanging in there.

19:20(IST)

The players are back onto the ground for the final session of the day. Morne Morkel will be bowling the first over post tea while R Ashwin is at the striker's end. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is at the non striker's end.

19:01(IST)

CricketNext’s Baidurjo Bhose from Cape Town: Out of the last ball before the tea break as Rabada gets Saha for 8. The score reads 82/7 and the writing is in the wall. Gibson cheers his team back into the dressing room as they now need 3 wickets in the last session to win the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the 3-game series.

19:00(IST)

Out: Kagiso Rabada traps Wriddhiman Saha in front of the wicket and the on field umpire gives it out after thinking for long. Saha opts for the DRS and replays showed that the ball was just hitting the leg stump after pitching outside off. So India retain their review but Saha is given out because of umpire's call. India lose their seventh wicket.

18:55(IST)

Vernon Philander continues to pile the pressure on the Indian batsmen as he bowls a maiden over. This was Philander's fourth maiden of the innings and his figures read: 3/22 in 12 overs. India need 126 more to win as Ashwin and Saha are fighting it out in the middle.

18:47(IST)

CricketNext’s Baidurjo Bhose from Cape Town: 10 minutes to go for the tea break here and India will look at Ashwin and Saha to bat the team to safety here and come back strongly in the third session. Things are only going to get more difficult from here for the Indians. The score reads 82/6 with the visitors still needing 126 to win this one.

18:44(IST)

Four: Saha looks to positive cricket as he comes onto the front foot and hits a Vernon Philander delivery on the up over the mid-wicket fielder for a boundary. Positive cricker from Saha and this is the need of the hour.

18:42(IST)

The South African pacers are wrecking havoc in Cape Town and the writing on the wall is clear for Team India. Four wickets to go and this is the last batting pair of the India innings. Saha and Ashwin are looking to bat as much as possible.

18:36(IST)

CricketNext’s Baidurjo Bhose from Cape Town: Rabada gets his man. He had promised vengeance and he is showing it as he sends back Pandya for 1, caught by AB de Villiers in the slip. That was a quality ball and Steyn enjoyed this one in the dressing room. The score reads 77/6 and India look in deep trouble here.

REVIEW DAY 3: In a rather frustrating day for the fans, third day of the first Test between India and South Africa was called off without a ball being bowled.
Rains were predicted on Sunday and that's exactly what happened as the day started with a strong drizzle. Much to the anguish of the capacity crowd, just when it seemed we could have some play, the rain became heavier. Play was finally called off at 3.30 local time.
However, since the game has moved at a rapid pace, it shouldn't have much effect, with the result still possible in the remaining two days.
Earlier, on day 2 Hardik Pandya showed exactly what the rest of the Indian batsmen lacked – grit - to keep India in the game at the end of the second day’s play in the first Test of the three-match series at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday.
Starting the day at 28/3, the visitors finished on 209 and then restricted the hosts to 65/2 at stumps, a lead of 142, to still garner hopes of making a match out of this one. Hashim Amla (4) and Kagiso Rabada (2) are the unbeaten batsmen.
Credit for staying afloat goes to none other than Pandya. Considered the next big thing in Indian cricket, the young sensation showed immense determination and adaptability to stand ground even when the likes of Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada beat him all ends up at the start of the innings. He was ready to miss, but he wasn’t ready to get out. He looked ugly, but he wasn’t willing to compromise his wicket. And the end result was a masterful 93 that helped India ensure that South Africa had a lead of only 77 when they came out to bat in the second innings.
He then returned to pick two wickets to end of an amazing day on the field. Pandya did get a life on 71 when Quinton de Kock missed an easy stumping off Keshav Maharaj, but that is a part of the game. It does not register on the scoreboard.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar must also be praised for hitting an 86-ball 25 in trying conditions to provide Pandya the support he needed with the top-order failing to apply itself late on Friday and in the first two sessions on Saturday. Having picked 4 wickets on Thursday, Bhuvneshwar returned to bide time in the middle and ensure that the final India total has some respectability to it.
Having learnt from the opening innings when they were 12/3 to start with, the hosts looked to apply themselves in the second innings with openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar leading from the front with a partnership of 52 at the top of the innings before Pandya removed Markram for 34, caught by Bhuvneshwar. But Pandya then removed Elgar for 25 to give the Indian players something to cheer about at the fag end of the second day’s play.
Earlier, it was the perfect start for the Indians as overnight batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma played out the first hour without losing a wicket. But just when it looked like the two were slowly starting to get a hang of the wicket, Rohit was caught plumb in front by Rabada. Not only did Rohit (11) get out at the wrong time, he also wasted a review as he asked for the DRS to be implanted even after looking like a dead duck.
With the score reading 57/4, R Ashwin joined Pujara in the middle and the two took India to lunch with a sense of solidarity that had even chief coach Ravi Shastri appreciate their effort in the dressing room. But the joy was short-lived as Vernon Philander sent back Pujara (26) off the first ball after lunch as he pitched one just on the off-stump and got it to move away quite a bit. In fact, it was a ball that could have easily been left as it was travelling on the 7th stump when he edged that for Faf du Plessis to complete an easy catch.
The score read 76/5 as Pandya walked in to join Ashwin in the middle. But the partnership did not last long as even though Pandya looked to be the one struggling, Ashwin (12) edged one from Philander straight to Quinton. Wriddhiman Saha too did not bother the scorers as he shouldered arms to a ball from Steyn to walk back for a duck. With the team reeling at 92/7, Bhuvneshwar Kumar joined Pandya and the two kept fighting like warriors. They missed some, edged some, but never gave up. They kept fighting.
At one point, Bhuvneshwar’s contribution was just 2 runs when their partnership reached 50. But after that, Bhuvneshwar too started opening up and playing a couple of shots. But with the partnership on 99, post tea, Morne Morkel had Bhuvneshwar (25) caught by Quinton. The score read 191/8 and after that it was solely on Pandya to strike fast and reach his second Test century.
