This weekend admire the celestial bodies while camping over night at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park
The time-strapped Mumbaikar may not be able to head to Bhandardhara or Malshej Ghat to look up and learn about stars, but how about an option within the city? The Nature Information Centre (NIC) at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) will conduct Celestica, an astro night for amateurs and professional stargazers.
A nature trail at SGNP
The national park regularly conducts overnight camps and bio-diversity excursions, but with Celestica, the idea is to solely focus on stargazing and its techniques. Shreyas Khade, education and extension officer at SGNP, explains, "The overnight event will begin in the evening with an audio-visual show giving a brief on the actual process, constellations and satellites, followed by a two-hour long stargazing session with Ajay Karnik, founder of Tarangan, an astronomy society. Gandhi Tekdi is located at a high point and is surrounded by forests. In the midst of the darkness and calm there, participants will get a thrilling experience of witnessing the stars."
The event will conclude with a nature trail on Sunday morning. The camping site can host 25 people, so head out for some quick adventure with the stars with a rucksack packed with binoculars, a camera, torch and sweaters to keep you warm.
