It was a bittersweet farewell to Gov. Brendan Byrne.
In a public memorial service that was by turns funny, serious and sad, those from all sides of the political spectrum gathered at the Paper Mill Playhouse on Monday to celebrate the life of the governor, who died last week at the age of 93.
Byrne, a Democrat and two-term governor from 1974 to 1982, was called a friend by former Republican Gov. Thomas Kean. Gov. Chris Christie said, "His life was a great joy. Not only to his family but to anybody who had the great privilege of spending some time with him."
