Prices of gold jumped again by Tk 1,400 per Bhori in markets just two weeks after they were revised in December last year.

Bangladesh Jewellers Samiti said the new prices will be effective from Wednesday.

The prices have been increased as demand is outstripping supply, said the association’s General Secretary Dilip Kumar Agarwala, bdnews24.com reports.

“The wedding season is going on, which increased the local demand for gold. In comparison, supply is low. Moreover, prices in the international market are high now. We have decided to raise prices after considering the situation,” he added.

Similar price hikes have also occurred in the markets for gold of inferior qualities.

Weddings in Bangladesh are usually held in winter. Traders had previously raised the prices of gold on Nov 26 at the start of winter.

It was revised up once again two weeks later on Dec 25.

New gold prices (per gram):

22-carat – Tk 4,350

21-carat – Tk 4,150

18-carat – Tk 3,700

Traditional gold – Tk 2,275
