Wintery mix results in more than 20 crashes locally

The Cambridge post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated 20 accidents in Guernsey County alone Monday as Mother Nature dumped a layer of ice and several inches of snow on area roadways.

Multiple motorists were transported to Southeastern Med due to injuries suffered in the accidents. Neither the extent of the injuries nor the conditions of the injured motorists were available as of press time.

Although no serious injuries or fatalities were reported, extensive property damage occurred in several accidents.

The highway patrol reported investigating one accident in Noble County and Cambridge police investigated a minor snow-related accident that occurred when a truck plowing snow from a parking lot backed into a trailer attached to a second vehicle.

No injuries were reported in those accidents.

A head-on collision on Old 21 Road just north of Cambridge sent one driver to the hospital while the other reported minor injuries including a sore chest after the air bag in his vehicle deployed.

The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. and involved a southbound pickup truck crossing the centerline after the driver lost control and striking a northbound Pontiac G6, whose driver was transported by United Ambulance to Southeastern Med in Cambridge.

No additional information regarding the drivers or the crash was available as of press time, according to the highway patrol’s Cambridge post.

Cambridge firefighters assisted at the scene, as they and other firefighters from volunteer departments did at crash sites throughout the day.

Multiple accidents were reported on Interstate 70 and Interstate 77 including a jackknifed tractor-trailer that blocked one lane of travel just north of the I-70/I-77 interchange.

Accidents were also reported on Plainfield Road, Bliss Road, Skyline Drive, Country Club Road, Old 21 Road and Parker Road.

The Noble County Sheriff’s Office confirmed receiving just one report of an accident in that county.

Guernsey County sheriff’s deputies assisted at multiple accident scene including closing a portion of Country Club Road after multiple vehicles became stuck behind a vehicle that slid off the roadway into a guardrail. No injuries were reported.

Due to the large volume of calls, additional information was not available from the highway patrol.
