The Blue Jays are reportedly interested in acquiring Miami Marlins’ outfielder Christian Yelich, according to Boston Globe writer Nick Cafardo.
The Jays certainly have enough talent in their system to pull off a trade for Yelich, if they wanted to. But, they would have to decide whether they really want to give up much of the depth that they have built up in the organization to get the 26-year-old outfielder.
The Marlins have started to take apart their roster and shed payroll.
They’ve already dealt Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna. Yelich, who won a Gold Glove in 2014, could be next.
Cafardo reports that the Braves, Giants, Nationals, Phillies and Rangers are also interested in the left-handed hitting Yelich, a 2016 Silver Slugger Award winner, who is under team control through the 2022 season.
Yelich, combined with the club’s current centre fielder Kevin Pillar, would give the Jays one of the best defensive outfields in baseball, though the Toronto front office is pumped about a group of outfielders already in their system, including Teoscar Hernandez and Anthony Alford.
