Katherine Louise “Katy” Schwinn, 88, of Findlay passed away Monday, January 8, 2018 at Sunrise of Findlay. Katy was born on April 1, 1929 to the late William D and Mabel (Stewart) Haley. On June 19, 1955 she married Roy R. Schwinn and he survives.
Katy is also survived by her many nieces and nephews; Phillip, Rex (Kellie), Jim (Susan), Mallory, Colin, and John Bibler, Michael (Kay), Kenneth, Ralph Jr., Lisa, Dawn, and Christopher (Liz) Hollis, and Amy (Mark) Stock.
Katy was a 1947 graduate of Findlay High School and attended the University of Findlay. She loved the Ohio State Buckeyes football team.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and was inducted into the Hancock County Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
Katy was honored for Meritorious Service, representing 36 years of dedication to aggressively and enthusiastically promoting the game of bowling. She started bowling in junior high school at the old Recreation Lanes. She went to her first WIBC tournament in 1961 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Then she encountered Ruth Smith, a lifetime member of FAWBA and past president of Ohio WBA, who encouraged her to “get involved.” After her first WIBC Convention in 1967 in Rochester, New York, she was hooked, and has attended every convention since Tulsa in 1970.
She was president of the Findlay Area WBA in 1970 and served in that capacity until 1993. She was also President of Inter-City from 1975-1986, and was elected as Director, District #1, of the Ohio WBA in 1996. She advanced to Sergeant-at-Arms and then served as Third Vice President before retiring from the Ohio WBA board in 2002 after 16 years of service.
She was elected Member Emerita in 2002.
Katy served on the board of the Buckeye Women Bowling Writers. She received the Ohio WBA May Jannetto Award for Local Bowling Promotion in 1985. She received the Ruth Smith Award for Outstanding Local President in the Ohio WBA in 1995. She is a past president and life member of the District #1 600 Club.
Katy bowled in various leagues and loved the game of bowling. Her personal high bowling average was 170, high series of 635, and high game of 256. She made many friends throughout the U.S.. representing bowling at international, national, state and local associations.
Katy enjoyed spending many of her weekends at Indian Lake.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2017 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 11 at 11:00 a.m.
Pastor Hugh Bouland will officiate. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise and Great Lakes Hospice for their kindness and the care they provided for Katy.
