Oprah for president?
Having won the annual Cecil B. DeMille award for her body of work at the Golden Globes Awards. Oprah Winfrey used her time at the podium Sunday night to praise those women who spoke out against sexual harassment.
"A new day is on the horizon," Oprah said. "And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'Me too' again."
Oprah also defended the First Amendment's freedom of the press, which has come under attack by President Donald Trump, who has called the independent news media "enemies of the American people."
"We know the press is under siege these days," she said. "We also know it's the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice."
Actress Meryl Streep, who won the same award a year earlier and took on Trump during her acceptance speech, called on Oprah to run for the White House in 2020.
“She launched a rocket," Streep, a Summit native who grew up in Bernardsville, told the Washington Post. “I want her to run for president. I don’t think she had any intention. But now she doesn’t have a choice.”
Will she run against Trump in 2020?
"We welcome the challenge, whether it be Oprah Winfrey or anybody else," White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said.
There are hurdles, for sure. And there are opportunities. Here is a sampling of both.
