Two-thirds of Dutch households watch internet content on TV

Over two-thirds of Dutch households had TVs connected to the internet at the end of 2017. The share increased 2 percent points over the year to 68 percent, according to research  by Telecompaper. Growth is starting to slow, after increasing from 49 percent of households at end-2014 to 61 percent a year later. 

Smart TVs are the most common way to watch internet content on a TV and were used as such by 39 percent of households at the end of 2017. The penetration of smart TVs increased 3 percent points in the past year, according to Telecompaper's Consumer Insights Panel. 

Another 4 percent of the Dutch used an Apple TV device to watch online content on their TV, a percentage unchanged since 2014. Just over one in ten (11%) had a Google Chromecast. 

Households with children watch internet content more often on their TVs, at 78 percent versus 63 percent of homes without kids. They are also more likely to have a set-top box supporting access to online content, at 19 percent, and to own a smart TV, at 45 percent.
