Cisco and Hyundai Motor Company have announced the latest details of their partnership to create what they describe as a “hyperconnected car”. The companies have been collaborating since April 2016 on the development of next-generation connected car technology and revealed at CES 2018 that their first in-vehicle network is in production and will be included in Hyundai’s premium 2019 vehicles. The platform will be based around 1 Gbps Ethernet, significantly increasing in-vehicle bandwidth and providing flexibility, lower costs and improved security. “By enabling IP and Ethernet services, legacy buses and devices will work together with the new Ethernet attached devices and services,” said the partners in a statement.

The platform will also offer over-the-air updates with a view to accelerating the time it takes to bring new capabilities to market and will feature a Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture. This new, in-vehicle network offers integrated, multi-layer security as well as full end-to-end networking and will enable new, high-speed services through an integration layer between software and legacy hardware, said the partners.

The companies added that they’re also exploring integration into Hyundai data centres to give access to real-time data and the possibility of connecting cars to city infrastructure.
