If somebody even breathes the word ‘rum’ in an Indian’s ears then the image of Old Monk leaps into the mind. Brigadier (retd.) Kapil Mohan, former Chairman and MD of Mohan Meakin Ltd. And the creator of the hugely successful Old Monk rum brand passed away on January 6, 2018, at the ripe old age of 88 years. As per reports, he was unwell for a few years and died of a cardiac arrest in Mohan Nagar area of Ghaziabad. Old Monk is such an iconic Indian brand that as soon as the news of its creator Kapil Mohan’s demise came into the media the rum brand started trending on Twitter. He is credited as being the ‘creator’ of Old Monk brand which was launched on December 19, 1954. Kapil Mohan who passed away at 88 years of age was an iconic and illustrious business tycoon who established one of the most profitable Indian companies. Old Monk is a vatted Indian dark rum which has a distinctive vanilla flavor and is blended and aged for a minimum of 7 years and has an alcohol content of 42.8%. Under Kapil Mohan’s leadership the Mohan Meakin Ltd, developed three distilleries, two breweries and new franchises all over India. After the news of his demise many of his followers, as well as admirers of Old Monk, took to Twitter to pay homage and tribute to the man who made Old Monk such an integral and well-known Indian brand.
