Analysis: Some stats and storylines from Friday's Red Demons hoops

The Dodge City Red Demons boys and girls basketball teams both beat the Cimarron Bluejays last Friday.

Overall, the girls team is 4-2, and the boys team is now 3-3 overall. Both start Western Athletic Conference play Friday on the road when they head to Liberal, Kansas to take on the Liberal Redskins.

In the meantime, here are a few stats and possible storylines from the teams’ games last Friday against Cimarron, which I found after taking some extra time to look at them.

This list is not, by any means, all-inclusive. I’ll have another writeup next week of the same sort.

These are ordered in order of player number, which is how they are listed on stat-sheets.

Notes on the boys game:

Senior Kaden Riekenberg’s four assists were the most he’s had in a game since the first game of the season, against Junction City.

Junior Cody Ibarra had his third-most playing time in Friday’s game. He used it to score five points, the second-most he has scored in a game this season. Against Guymon, the game before the one against Cimarron Friday, he had nine points.

He also had one of his better defensive games, recording two steals for the second time in two games. In all four games prior to Guymon, he had only one total, which came in the team’s opener against Junction City.

Senior Hunter Heath’s 17 points were a season-high for him, as were his 10 rebounds. His block gave him a block in each of the last three games after having started the season with zero in each of the three games prior.

Heath’s production Friday came in a game in which he played more than any other this season, though only by four seconds. He played 19 minutes, 5 seconds on Friday. His previous high this season had been 19 minutes, 1 second against Manhattan, in the second game of the season.

Sophomore Beau Foster scored eight points Friday, matching his highest in a game this season. His biggest statistical contribution, however, came on defense. Foster had seven steals in Friday’s game. In the six games the team has had this season, no player, opponent or teammate, has had that many in a single game. Manhattan’s John Ostermann was the closest, having six against the Red Demons earlier this year.

Junior Noah Sowers played well Friday. Not only did he have more than 20 points for the second time this season, with 24, he also had zero fouls for the first time this season. (He entered the game averaging over 2.8 fouls per game). His 24 points were a game-high Friday, as were his six assists.

Sophomore John Johnson tied Heath with a game-high 10 rebounds. It was his highest total in a game this season. It was also his second consecutive game with three steals.

Notes on the girls game:

Junior Payton Magouirk saw her most playing time this season so far, playing 25 minutes, 30 seconds. It was the most she had played since opening night against Junction City, when she was in the game for 22 minutes, 3 seconds. It was also her third start of the season, the last being against Hugoton and the other being against Junction City.

While Magouirk only scored two points, her four assists were a team-high. They were also a full half of the team’s eight total assists. She was also the only Red Demon who saw playing time who didn’t commit a turnover.

Junior Ezinne Okoro’s four total rebounds were second only to sophomore Chidera Okoro and Junior Hayden Sanchez, who each had six. Ezinne and Chidera Okoro have finished first and second on the team in rebounds in four of the Lady Demons’ six games this season. The only time of those Chidera has had more rebounds was against Manhattan, when she had six to Ezinne’s five.

Including the Cimarron game, one of the two has either led the team in rebounding outright, or tied for it, a total of five out of six times. This was only the second time all season Chidera Okoro had more, but in every case, the two’s rebound numbers have been no more than two rebounds apart.

Freshman Lauren Gleason saw her second-most playing time Friday, the first having been the game before against Guymon. In each of the last two games, she has gotten an assist and a steal, despite having none of either in the first four games of the season.

Junior Hayden Sanchez tied Chidera Okoro for a team-high six rebounds Friday. Three of those were offensive rebounds, which gave her a game-high in the category of offensive rebounds.
