Mentally ill girl beaten, dragged hands tied

The Soro police in Baleswar district began investigation into a case of inhuman torture to a girl after a video of the incident went viral in social media on Monday although the police were yet to receive any formal complaint from the victim or her parents. The girl is a mentally-challenged and belongs to Sajanpur under the Soro police station. Her father is also a mentally-unstable person, said sources.

The girl was roughed up by a group of villagers when she went to collect firewood for her house kitchen from a neighbour’s field on Thursday. Her mother said, “I had refrained my daughter not to go to collect firewood; yet she went. She was bashed up by a group of around seven people.  “They asked her to keep silent about the incident, but when the video went viral, the assailants offered her bribe.”     “After learning from the media, a police team went to the victim’s house. Accused have fled. Action would be taken,” said Soro PS Inspector-in-Charge Karitk Malik. In the video, 3  persons, including a woman, were seen beating victim by tying hands and dragging her.
