Public's help sought in burglary investigation

At least 20 daytime burglaries across Monroe County are believed to be connected to the same thieves.

Law enforcement authorities are asking Monroe County residents to be extra aware of suspicious activity and vehicles after 20 or more daytime burglaries are being linked to the same thieves.

Detectives and deputies have been working on the rash of break-ins for more than a month and have had little luck developing sources or obtaining description of vehicles.

“We need the public’s help,” said Detective Sgt. Rob Moody. “We’re trying to identify these guys.”

Moody said the suspects at first focused on communities in the northern parts of the county, but the crooks have recently made their way south to LaSalle and Bedford townships. The break-ins began around late November or early December.

Moody said he believes more than one burglar is involved and a getaway vehicle is most likely being used. He added that the same people are believed to be responsible for the burglaries because the methods of operation are similar.

“We’re assuming they’re all involved because the MO is the same in all of them,” he said. “They’ve all been done during the day.”

The suspects apparently determine that no one is home before they make their way inside by either breaking a window or forcing open a door. The suspects tend to steal jewelry, firearms and containers of loose change. They also use a pillow case from the residence to carry out the loot. The thieves generally ignore electronic equipment.

Reports have been taken in the townships of Ash, Berlin, Frenchtown, Raisinville, Exeter, Monroe, LaSalle and Bedford. The homes are spread out and in most cases the thieves strike during the day.

Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone is asking citizens to be extra vigilant and observant of activities not only near their homes, but their neighbor’s homes as well. Witnesses to any suspicious behavior are asked to call Monroe County Central Dispatch at (734) 243-7070 or 911 if it’s an emergency situation. They also can call Detective Bureau at (734) 240-7530.
