CLOUD and rain will bludgeon Britain on Tuesday before fog approaches to plague commuters, the Met Office has forecast.

Tuesday will start off dreary as grey skies cover the country during another frosty morning.

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “For most, it’s a grey Tuesday, and the cloud thick enough at times to give some light drizzle, but no significant rainfall and the breeze will mostly stay light and gentle as well.”

Clare Nasir added: “A cold start to the day, a frosty one in places, through the day the cloud will be thick enough again for a little bit of dampness and also poor visibility over the higher routes.

“Later on an area of cloud and rain will push in across Northern Ireland, the West Country, as well as Wales.

“The wind picks up some strength here, and it will bring in some milder air just towards the south-west."

Southern parts of the UK will climb into double-figure temperates while the rest of Britain remains bitterly cold.

Ms Nasir added: “Nine or 10 degrees Celsius will be the highs in the south, elsewhere generally about three or four degrees Celsius.

“So through Tuesday into Wednesday the low pressure weather front continues its passage eastwards, bringing with it cloud and also some outbreaks of rain, but it will clear skies towards the west, so some brighter skies emerging across the west as we head through Wednesday into Thursday.”

As the week continues, fog will become increasingly prominent that could prove difficult for commuters during the working week.

Ms Nasir went on: “But through the latter part of the week, we are expecting the risk of some fog and also some frost, and the fog could be quite stubborn come Thursday morning and Friday morning.”

Bookmaker Coral is currently offering odds of events for this January to be the coldest on record.

Edinburgh and Glasgow have the shortest odds for snow this week at 1-2 while Manchester, Birmingham and London have 6-4, 2-1 and 3-1 odds respectively.

The company’s Harry Aitkenhead declared: “We had no choice but to cut our odds over the weekend as the temperatures continue to plummet and there’s now a real likelihood of this January being the coldest we’ve ever had.

“The public will be eagerly keeping an eye out for snow this week but our odds suggest it may only fall north of the border.”

Roads remain relatively quiet for the Tuesday morning commute with the majority of incidents reported in the south of England.
