A bandit leader was killed in a 'shootout' with members of Naval police in the Sundarbans of Bagerhat district early Tuesday.
Deceased Farid was the second in-command of notorious 'Chhoto Bahini' in the Sundarbans, said Swarankhola Police Station officer in-charge Md Kabirul Islam.
On secret information that a gang was trying to abduct fishermen in the Shela River under Swrankhola range, a team of police conducted a drive in the river, he said.
Sensing presence of the team, the bandit gang opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gun-battle.
Later, Farid was found dead at the scene, the OC added.
The body was sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue.
A case was filed in this connection with the police station, the OC said.
