Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A Texas woman shot and killed her husband and two young sons before turning the gun on herself in the hotel room of a popular resort, police said Monday.
Police were called to the eighth floor of the San Luis Resort in Galveston, Texas at around 4:30 a.m. on Monday. "Faint moaning" could be heard from behind the bolted locked door of the hotel room, police said in a statement. After forcing entry into the room, police found all four members of a family had been shot, including a 5-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy.
According to Click2Houston reported, the suspected shooter was 37-year-old Flor De Maria Pineda Canas. Her husband was 39-year-old Mauricio Canas. The names of the children have not been released.
"The motive is unknown at this time, but forensic data collected at the scene indicates that the female is believed to be the shooter at this time, and is believed to have killed her two children and her husband before apparently taking her own life with a 9mm handgun found adjacent to her body," police said.
The shooting is still under investigation. Police said there was no sign of struggle and it's possible the victims were shot in their sleep.
The family checked into the resort only hours earlier at 7 p.m. on Sunday night.
"The tragic circumstances surrounding these students' deaths are almost too much to bear," the Goose Creek Independent School District, where the two boys attended school, said in a statement. "We are grieving for the loss of young life and its infinite possibilities and we pray for the family, friends and students most affected by this tragedy."
