Sioux Falls, SD
There will be a new mayor of Sioux Falls this year. While the campaign process is just heating up for the candidates, the man holding the job right now is taking a step back.We visited with Mayor Mike Huether and his wife Cindy in their home to find out what's next for the Sioux Falls power couple.
During Monday's press conference, Mayor Huether kept his political aspirations somewhat tight-lipped. However, the woman who knows him best says this is not the end.
"He's not retiring. We'll be back doing something. Who knows what that is right now, but for right now, it's the best decision," Cindy Huether said.
That decision is to take a break. After nearly a decade in public service, Mayor Huether is re-focusing his priorities on his family, which includes a new, little addition named George, his grandson.
Like any ambitious person, Mayor Huether knows there are possible consequences for stepping back.
Sammi Bjelland: And so, when you take time off, obviously being in the public eye, you have to remember that people might forget you if you take too much time off.
Huether: Yeah.
Bjelland: Are you at all concerned about that?
Huether: Very much… Very much.
The Huethers say despite this concern, they're taking the time they need to regroup.
So, what is next? Mayor Mike says while the House of Representatives doesn't seem like a good fit for him, he'd be honored to lead in the U.S. Senate or from the Governor's mansion.
However, he's not limiting his sights to just South Dakota. Even running for President of the United States has been discussed at the Huether dinner table.
"Sincerely, I have thought about it. We've talked about it. And I won't rule that out either," Huether said.
Through all the speculation and possibilities, the Huethers say as a team, they'll find the right fit for the family. They just don't know when or where that will be.
"No, you know. You just know when it's right. I don't know if it's a week. We don't know if it's a year. Five years. We don't know. Sometimes the stars just have to align, so honestly we don't know," Cindy said.
Mayor Huether did say when he decides to run for another political office it will be as an Independent.
