While electric and hybrid technology continues to dominate as alternatives to traditional gas-powered cars, Hyundai is among a subsection of auto manufactuers who believes the future of the industry is not yet set.

At CES 2018, it has unveiled its latest fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), the zero-emissions Nexo SUV.

It has a Tesla-topping range of 370 miles and promises and an estimated 55MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). Also, unlike fully electric cars, it only takes only five minutes to recharge.

The follow up to the Tuscon FCEV has a 20% faster 0-60mph speed at 9.5 seconds. The top speed is also an impressive 25% higher.

Hyundai is also bundling in a lot of its new driver assist technologies, including the semi-autonomous remote smart parking assistant. This tech will drive the car to and from its parking spot all by itself, at the push of a button.

Inside the car, there are heart rate sensors within the steering wheel, which power a new stress detection tool. If the Nexo thinks you’re under duress while behind the wheel the car will dim the lighting, play relaxing music or even contact a doctor.

Voice controls also stretch to door locks, climate control and the sunroof.

That car will only be available in California (where else?) later this year. That’s because the LA and San Francisco areas are the only ones equipped with enough of the necessary hydrogen filling stations.

While the infrastructure is limited right now, the likes of Hyundai, Honda and Toyota are all making a significant push with the fuel cell tech.
