Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., believes Oprah Winfrey would make for a formidable candidate in the 2020 presidential contest if she decided to run.

“She would add a lot to the field, absolutely,” Kaine told reporters when asked about the speculation surrounding Winfrey as a 2020 prospect. “A lot of people out there should consider it.”

Kaine, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2016, cautioned Democrats not to look ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, however. He argued that voters will be “energized” in 2020 if Democrats have a successful election this November.

“Anybody thinking about 2020 should try to make sure we have a very good 2018 because then people will be energized, so don’t look past 2018,” he said.

Democrats have talked about the media figure as a 2020 possibility after her speech at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night.

Despite being Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Kaine has ruled out a bid of his own in 2020 and is focusing on his own re-election bid in the fall.
