Wetland bird census begins in Bhola

BHOLA, Jan 8: A seven-member team of Bangladesh Bird Club kicked off the International Bird Census from Bhola on Monday.
The bird watchers started conducting the 32nd census of wetland birds in the country from Khyaghat with two fishing trawlers.
The team would visit 25-30 chars in the coastal districts of Bhola, Laxmipur, Noakhali and Patuakhali for nine days. The census will be in Bhola, Monpura, Hatia, Char-bari, Nijhum dweep, Damar Char, Char Shahjalal, and Dhal-char.
The census has been going on from 1987 in the wetland by the bird lovers, bird watchers and researchers in the country. The water bird census of the coast takes place in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of January across the world.
Wetlands International, an international organisation, publishes a book based on the census which is considered as the important document of wetland birds. According to the bird watchers of the globe, the birds which are on the verge of extinction including Chamachthut-Batan, Deshi Gangchosha, Baronot, Baroguti Eagle, many spices of ducks and beach birds live in the chars of Bhola. The region is important for survival of many different types of birds.
The team included Bird Club Secretary Tareq Anu, Sarwar Alam Deepu, and Sayem Chowdhury. Bangladesh Bird Club members and Mountaineer MA Muhith was the manager of the team.
The team will reach Dhaka on January 16 after completion of the wetland bird census in the coastal region.
