Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer suggested Oprah Winfrey may have a difficult time if she decides to enter the 2020 presidential race because she is inexperienced in politics, but called her an “extremely formidable” opponent.
“There’s no question in my mind that she’d be extremely formidable,” Spicer told “Good Morning Britain” on Monday. “That being said, she doesn’t have the political infrastructure. And we’ve seen this before in our history — where people who have tried to pop in that are not in politics and have had a difficult time adjusting.”
Host Piers Morgan cut Spicer off to remind him that President Trump had no political experience before he ran for president.
“Sean, Sean, Sean!” Morgan yelled. “The current president of the United States had no political experience! Sean! You were his press secretary. Have you forgotten Donald Trump?”
Spicer laughed, saying he “100 percent” remembers he used to work for Trump.
“President Donald Trump proves that there is an appetite for outsiders,” he said. “... The question is, was that an anomaly or is that the new norm? And that’s all I’m getting at.”
Yet Spicer doesn’t believe Winfrey could beat Trump if she decides to run in 2020.
“This would be the clash of titans," Spicer said, but "hands down Donald Trump [would win] but I think Oprah would give him a run for his money.”
Winfrey sparked chatter of a possible run for the White House while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes on Sunday.
CNN reported Monday that Winfrey was “actively thinking” about running for president but she hadn’t made up her mind.
