KALYAN: Relatives of a patient, who died during treatment, vandalized a hospital in
Dombivli and assaulted the hospital staffers on Sunday afternoon.
The mob, most of them relatives of the deceased, Neelam Patil (25), broke AIMS Hospital's main glass door and forced their way inside the 100-bed hospital.
Police said Patil was admitted to the hospital at 2.30am on Sunday with acute breathing difficulty. She was first taken to Icon Hospital, where doctors said her condition was serious and referred her to AIMS. Her family alleged the doctors were negligent while treating her, but refused to comment further.
"The victim had to be put on ventilator as she was suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome triggered by pneumonia. Her condition was critical. Despite best of efforts, she passed away on Sunday at 3.30pm. The news of her death agitated her relatives, who went on to vandalize the hospital," said Dr S Chougule, CEO of AIMS. Ambulance driver Ajay Jadhav, who was injured in the attack, needed six stitches in the leg.
The hospital lodged a complaint with Manpada police who booked 10-12 people under various sections of the IPC and sections 3 and 4 of Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property Act. Manpada police said they are going through the
CCTV grabs for more leads. Senior police inspector G Kabdule said, "We have booked 12 people, including the deceased's brother. We will arrest them once they complete the last rites."
Patil's body has been sent for post-mortem.
