Former President George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary over the weekend, making them the longest married couple in presidential history.
The ailing duo celebrated the January 6 anniversary in a “very low key” manner and with calls from their family, said a spokesman.
George, 93, and “Bar,” 92, were married in 1945, just after he returned from serving as a Navy pilot in the Pacific during World War II and before entering Yale University. They had six children, including former President George W. Bush.
Eric Draper, former White House photo director, and the photographer for George W. Bush, posted a picture of the couple on his Facebook page with this note: “Happy Anniversary to Former President @GeorgeHWBush and former first Lady Barbara Bush. They are the longest-married couple in presidential history, since celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary Saturday. Their love is inspiring.”
