Nick in the AM: Icy road conditions prompt school cancellations Monday

Good morning, troops. It's Monday, Jan. 8.

The good news is temperatures are above freezing consistently for the first time in weeks. Does this mean we've finally broken the back of winter?

Not on your life.

Some Journal Star-area school districts are closed today because of the late Sunday/early Monday coat of ice and snow central Illinois received. Below is a list of the closings as far as we know. If you know of others, please pass them to news@pjstar.com or nvlahos@pjstar.com.

• Dunlap School Distrct 323

• East Peoria Grade School District 86

• Illinois Valley Central District 321, Chillicothe

We're not sure how bad the roads are in rural areas, but as of about 6 a.m., most arterial streets in Peoria were in good condition, according to Sie Maroon, the city assistant public works director.

Some main drags had slushy precipitation but were passable, Maroon stated in an email. City crews also plan to plow residential streets, although accumulation did not reach the requisite 2 inches for that.

All in all, be careful out there and heed Vanilla Ice's warning today, OK? (And no, this has nothing to do with his hair.)
