3 die in Benguet road mishap

TUGUEGARAO , Philippines  —  Three members of a family died while three others were injured when their vehicle driven by a police officer fell into a ravine in Bokod, Benguet on Saturday.

The fatalities, identified as Fely Layno, 60, and her grandchildren Judea, 13, and Juleah, 9, were declared dead on arrival at the Baguio General Hospital, according to Chief Inspector Vincent Tamid-ay, chief of the Bokod police.

Senior Police Officer 2 Joefel Layno, 43; his wife Judith, 30, and their son Joerich, 2, were rushed to the same hospital for treatment.

Reports said Layno remained unconscious as of yesterday, his wife critical and their son in stable condition.

The fatalities were mother and daughters of the police officer.

Reports said the family was on their way home to Bambang in Nueva Vizcaya when they figured in the accident at around 2:30 p.m. in Barangay Ambuklao.

The family came from a vacation in Ilocos and Baguio City.

Investigators expressed belief the Toyota Hilux developed engine trouble, causing Layno to lose control of the wheel.
