Sunderland have pounced to sign Chelsea ace Clarke-Salter, who becomes Chris Coleman's first signing as manager.
The 20-year-old was a key part of England's U20 World Cup winning side back in the summer.
And he is not expected to be the only new face at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland initially wanted to complete a dal for Clarke-Salter in time for their crunch game against Middlesbrough.
But Chelsea boss Antonio Conte's decision to bench him for the Blues' 0-0 FA Cup draw against Norwich means he could now make his bow against Cardiff City.
Coleman has expressed his delight at the deal by saying: “Jake is a hugely talented young player who has jumped at the opportunity to come to this club and show people what he can do.
“You don’t play for a club like Chelsea unless you have tremendous ability and I’m sure he will be able to demonstrate that for Sunderland.
“Jake is exactly the type of hungry young player I have spoken about and he has shown me just how keen he is to come to here and play in front of our supporters.”
Clarke-Salter has spent the bulk of his career in the Chelsea academy.

He made his debut in 2016 in a 4-0 win over Aston Villa, replacing Pedro.
After the game, John Terry tipped him to have a big future at Stamford Bridge.
"Jake has a great attitude," he said.
"I remember watching him a couple of years ago being in control of the game and a really vocal player. He reminds me a bit of myself."
