DOZENS of people packed a York coffee shop to celebrate its expansion as a community hub.

The Chill Cafe in Front Street, Acomb, has transformed its upper floor into a community kitchen to help teach vulnerable and homeless people how to cook for themselves, and help families in the area.

A relaunch event was held on Saturday, with a ribbon cut by Lord Mayor Councillor Barbara Boyce, celebratory drinks, and dancing from Chill Bon Bon.

Mary Passeri, one of the directors of the cafe, said: “It’s cost nearly £4,000 all together, as we had to knock down walls and move rooms around.I’m absolutely excited to see it all come together.”

Cllr Boyce said: “These are the sort of events I just love attending as it shows the huge amount of work done in York by volunteers. I never fail to be amazed with the commitment of these wonderful people.”

A shower and washing machine have also been installed at the cafe for homeless people to use, but the cafe is open to all.
