United Way of Volusia-Flagler aids More Than $215,000 in Hurricane Irma Recovery
Dennis Burns, president and CEO of United Way Volusia-Flagler Counties (UWVFC), announced that since Hurricane Irma made landfall in September, the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties has distributed more than $215,000 in aid to area nonprofits and community members. Most recently, The United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties approved a $107,600 allocation of funds to the recovery efforts of Volusia and Flagler nonprofit agencies to end 2017. Funds were donated by the Lilly Foundation through United Way Worldwide, Parks Dermatology, and SunTrust Bank. This funding will serve approximately 10,655 individuals in Flagler and Volusia counties. This donation is in addition to an earlier allocation of $81,000 to six area nonprofits from various funding sources for Hurricane Irma relief and recovery efforts, along with $26,656 in in-kind donations facilitated by the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties.
Spaghetti dinner
The Slovene National Benefit Society will have a Spaghetti Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at 421 N. Samsula Drive, New Smyrna Beach. This is open to the public and the cost is a $10 donation. There will be desserts and the lodge bar will be open for libations. For information, call 386-427-1410.
West Coast Swing dance
There will be a West Coast Swing dance 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Oceans Dance Studio, 134 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach. Beginner lessons start at 7 p.m. by Kristina and Intermediate lesson is at 7:45 p.m. by Joe Mounts. General dancing is from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Cost is $10 for lessons and dance. AAUW meeting
The American Association of University Daytona Beach Branch will have its monthly meeting 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Tomoka Brewing Company, 4647 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange. The guest speaker will be Mary Gatta, Ph.D. who will discuss the status of women in the labor market today and what it will take for it to be the Year of the Woman in workplaces. East Coast Songwriters to meet
All genres of songwriters are welcome at the East Coast Songwriters Meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Sound Mind Studio, 1246 Ridgewood Ave., Holly Hill. Meet songwriters and get song critiques and collaborate. Bring in at least eight typed lyric sheets for a song critique or your latest creation ready to pitch. The first few meetings are free.
