Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has congratulated the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for its decision to feature the Konark Wheel on a new Rs 10 note.
Patnaik expressed his happiness on micro-blogging site Twitter over the RBI’s announcement: “Filled with pride that the rich cultural heritage of #Odisha finds place in Nation’s currency. #Konark Wheel, the timeless symbol of our art and sculpture, is depicted in the new Rs 10 currency note. Congratulate @RBI for incorporating the world famous Sun Temple motif in the note.”
The RBI will shortly issue the currency note in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing signature of its Governor Urjit R Patel. It has come out with a new design of chocolate brown ten rupee note.
The new note will have the same height of 63mm as the existing ten rupee note, but the width will be 123 mm, slightly lesser than the 137-mm width of the current note. Besides, another main difference is that the reverse of the note will carry a motif of the Konark Sun Temple.
The existing ten rupee note carries the image of fauna of India, rhinoceros, elephant and tiger.
However, all the banknotes in the denomination of Rs 10 issued by the Reserve Bank in the earlier series will continue to be legal tender, the RBI has said.
