This Is Us' Sterling K. Brown made history as the first African-American male to win a Lead Actor in a Drama Series Golden Globe at Sunday's award show.

Brown is only the fifth black man to be nominate in the category -- following Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice), James Earl Jones (Gabriel's Fire and Pros and Cons), Andre Braugher (Gideon's Crossing), and Wentworth Miller for Prison Break.

The actor didn't acknowledge the historic nature of his win, but he did credit the creator of This Is Us, Dan Fogelman for giving him a role that allows him to play a man who is actively black.

"Throughout the majority of my career, I have benefited from color blind casting, which means, 'Hey, let's throw a brother in this role,' right? It's always really cool," Brown said. "Dan Fogelman, you wrote a role for a black man, like that could only be played by a black man. So, what I appreciate so much about this thing is that I am being seen for who I am and being appreciated for who I am."

The actor explained what being able to play Randall Pearson, a black man who was adopted by a white family when he was infant on the NBC drama, means not only for himself but all of the other black men out there who are starved for positive representation on TV and in films.

"What that means it is harder for people to dismiss me and to dismiss people who look like me, so thank you Dan. Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press."

Brown also won the Lead Drama Actor Emmy in September and a Golden Globe last year for his part in the limited series People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

This Is Us returns Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 9/8c on NBC.
