A $10.9 million senior housing development next to the Swansea MetoLink station broke ground Monday.
Metro Landing of Swansea will include 62 affordable one- and two-bedroom apartments for older adults. A joint venture made up of the Southwestern Illinois Development Authority (SWIDA) and Bywater Development Group are developing the project in partnership with Bi-State Development, which operates MetroLink.
The Illinois Housing Development Authority provided the majority of the financing, and additional construction financing came from PNC Bank.
Additional support comes from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and Ameren, along with the St. Clair County Intergovernmental Grants Department.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who helped secure Housing and Urban Development Assistance for the project, was in Swansea Monday for the event.
“This transit-oriented development will help revitalize the community and provide high-quality, affordable housing that allows active seniors to live more independently,” Durbin said in a statement.
The project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2019. The general contractor is Altman Charter, based in St. Louis County. Chicago-based Worn Jerabek Wiltse Architects is the architect.
